Pleural Plaques and Mesothelioma

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with Pleural Plaques or any Asbestos-related disease, we are here to help you file a claim.

Pleural plaques can start appearing 10-20 years after the initial exposure to asbestos or not appear for 20-50 years after exposure to asbestos. The reason for such long latency period for pleural plaques to develop is thought to be because of the body's immune system's reaction to the asbestos fibers once they become imbedded in the body's organs which break down over time.

Pleural plaques are white grayish raised areas of fibrosis collagen tissue located on the inside of the lining of the lungs, chest wall and diaphragm (parietal pleura) and in rare cases can be found near the ribcage. Pleural plaques do not produce any symptoms and no current treatment exists.

Pleural plaques are caused by asbestos related airborne particles that are as small as .03 microns. These asbestos particles work their way unseen into the lungs and imbed themselves in body tissues where they cause scarring and inflammation.

Pleural plaques act as warnings signs for doctors to recognize the possibility of asbestos exposure. Studies show that more than 50 percent of workers exposed to asbestos over long periods of time have developed pleural plaques.

Pleural plaques are the most common condition related to all asbestos related thoracic diseases. Pleural plaques are always benign and not considered pre-malignant cancer and will not ever change from plaques to cancer.

Pleural plaques are not automatically a sign that a person has an asbestos related lung disease.

Pleural Plaques do not require medical treatment, but their presence should prompt regular medical check-ups with your doctor.

Pleural plaques do not cause symptoms and in most cases they are non-life threatening.

Pleural Plaques and Asbestos

Pleural plaques can develop even with very low exposure to asbestos.

Pleural plaques are almost always present in patients diagnosed with asbestosis.

Pleural plaques are often present in patients diagnosed with Mesothelioma cancer.

Studies have shown that many individuals with pleural plaques do not even know they are suffering from their asbestos exposure.

Any history of asbestos exposure puts an individual at greater risk for developing life-threatening asbestos related diseases later in life.

If you smoke and have been exposed to asbestos the combination of the two increase the chances that the pleural plaques can lead to a more serious asbestos related disease.

Diagnosing Pleural Plaques

Pulmonary tests can be used to diagnose a patient's pleural plaque condition and rule out the development of other asbestos-related diseases.

Pleural plaques show up visibly on chest x-rays and can become so thick that they resemble a tumor on an x-ray, radiograph or CT scan.

Pleural plaques show up on x-rays as areas of shadowing. This shadowing is a result of the calcification of the pleural plaques.

Pleural plaques can go undiagnosed in most individuals and is usually discovered when they undergo a chest x-ray for the diagnosis of pneumonia or chest related issues.

Once pleural plaques are diagnosed the condition does not call for any type of treatment.

Pleural plaques are usually calcified and can range from small to large in size.

Most studies evidence suggests that pleural plaques are not a sign of future development of asbestos lung cancer.

Pleural Plaques and Doctor Check ups

If you have been diagnosed with pleural plaques you should see your doctor once a year for a chest x-ray. A doctor should monitor the growth of any pleural plaques with your regular check-ups or at the first sign of difficulty breathing for any prolonged period of time. Regular physical checkups can help doctors monitor the growth of the pleural plaques.

As part of your regular check-up request that your doctor conduct pulmonary (breathing) tests to monitor your lung function.

Studies show that individuals that develop pleural plaques have an increased risk for developing Mesothelioma and asbestos-related cancers.
