Mesothelioma - A Medical Dictionary, Bibliography, and Annotated Research Guide to Internet References (Paperback)

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/uploads/images/andbook002.jpg

In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

Mesothelioma by Bruce W. S. Robinson (Editor), A. Philippe, M.D. Chahinian (Editor)

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/uploads/images/meso0001.jpg

From The New England Journal of Medicine

Mesothelioma is a multiauthored book that aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, biology, diagnosis, and treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Edited by Drs. Bruce Robinson and Philippe Chahinian (from Perth, Australia, and New York City, respectively), the book brings together an international group of authors, most of whom are acknowledged experts on this disease. The selection of authors highlights the fact that mesothelioma, though an uncommon disease in many countries, is a considerable problem internationally. The strongest focus of the book is on the epidemiology of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Of the 20 chapters, 7 discuss the epidemiology and history of the disease in North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, and Japan. One of these chapters chronicles how its author, Christopher Wagner, now deceased, and his colleagues established the link between exposure to asbestos and mesothelioma in South Africa circa 1960, despite initial skepticism from physicians elsewhere. Chapters devoted to the pathology of mesothelioma and to staging and surgery, gene therapy, photodynamic therapy, molecular pathogenesis (including the role of simian virus 40), and immunotherapy are well written, generally accurate, and thorough. A chapter on the medicolegal aspects of mesothelioma is a useful and highly relevant part of the book in the light of the large volume of litigation concerning asbestos that is related to mesothelioma. In contrast, chapters on clinical and palliative care and on imaging are not so well organized and lack detail. More attention could have been given to descriptions of the clinical and radiologic presentation according to disease stage, and the discussion of the comparative merits of computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging could have been enhanced with additional illustrations. The discussion of palliative care is cursory and would have benefited from an expert discussion of the methods of pain management. Although the role of pleuroscopy is addressed in a chapter by C. Boutin, a leader in this technique, current clinical practice in North America does not parallel this European experience, and some comment in that regard would have been beneficial. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are grouped together in a single chapter written by Chahinian, a medical oncologist. A full chapter on radiation techniques and results written by a radiation oncologist would have been worthwhile. Finally, the organization of the chapters is puzzling. Chapters on epidemiology are placed at both the beginning and the end of the book, and the progression of the chapters in between is not entirely logical. As is true of all textbooks, this book is not absolutely current because of the inherent delay between the writing of the individual chapters and publication. Although a decade ago this delay would not have made a difference for a book dealing with mesothelioma, today it does. Advances in biology and clinical care are now occurring at a rapid pace in this disease, and therefore some of the information presented is subtly out of date. Overall, however, this book provides an excellent review for the practicing clinician. There are few textbooks addressing mesothelioma, and this one is a welcome addition to the literature.Valerie W. Rusch, M.D.

Malignant Mesothelioma by Harvey I. Pass

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image029.jpg

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which the cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest (pleura) or abdomen (peritoneum). This lethal disease is associated with asbestos and has vast economic and legal implications. As the disease takes approximately twenty years to manifest itself in humans, a wave of diagnoses are expected in the near future. In the United States alone, an estimated 3,500 - 4,000 patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma annually, and it is estimated that over the next 35 years, more than 250,000 people in Western Europe will be diagnosed with the disease. Malignant Mesothelioma, edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, is a comprehensive text that relates science, pathology, clinical aspects and therapy for mesothelioma under one cover. The book integrates the newest research and advances in its discussions of the disease, covering such topics as carcinogenesis, epidemiology, bench work, endoscopy, multimodality approaches and treatment. It includes discussions on novel approaches to mesothelioma, such as gene therapy, vaccination strategies and immunotherapy, as well as discussions on the legal and economic aspects of the disease. Over 200 illustrations round out the text. An invaluable reference for the medical oncologist, thoracic surgeon, radiation oncologist, pulmonologist, and bench worker interested in the disease.

Lung Cancer And Mesothelioma by Howard Gutman

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image031.jpg

Lung cancer and Mesothelioma is a comprehensive reference for lung cancer. Comprising 41 chapters and 480 pages, the book reviews chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and gene therapy and many other topics. Learn how the new gene therapies work, what chemotherapy is designed to do, how lung tumors are categorized and why they metastasize. Each form of therapy and each stage of disease has its own chapter for easy reference. Thus you can review material on radiation treatments, or stage 1 non-small cell lung cancer in a single chapter.

The book is designed to help you understand a difficult subject and interact with your doctor to make meaningful choices. It examines traditional therapies as well as new drugs like Tarceva and investigational therapies, and provides numerous references and directions for further research.

Utilizing his experience as a caregiver, the author discusses the stresses and practical realities of dealing with lung cancer. There are chapters on chemotherapy side effects, insurance questions, and the pressures of care giving. Where are support groups located, what help can you provide when someone is hospitalized, and how do you talk about a serious illness are among the questions the book tries to answer.

Pathology of Malignant Mesothelioma by Françoise Galateau-Sallé

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image033.jpg

Mesothelioma is a global problem, its incidence is rising in Europe, and it is a major health problem in the USA and other parts of the world, largely related to the previous use of asbestos products. Diagnosis, which rests on the pathology, is very difficult because of its diverse appearances and the potential for other diseases to mimic it.

This monograph has been assembled by an international group of experts with a wealth of experience from France, UK, USA, Australia and Canada to aid in pathological diagnosis. In all these countries, the disease poses significant health problems. This book deals with clinical, radiological, epidemiological, molecular, and histopathological aspects of the disease. Tumors of the pleural, pericardial, peritoneal cavities as well as the ovary and tunica vaginalis are considered. Differential diagnoses of serosal-based lesions are fully discussed and the use of immunohistochemical stains is explained. Plentiful illustrations give further aid to diagnosis

Fatal Deception: How Big Business is Still Killing Us with Asbestos by Michael Bowker

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image039.jpg

Fatal Deception juxtaposes the true story of one small town against the shocking scientific, political, and economic realities of this global problem. In Libby, Montana, vermiculite mining hurtled the town from abject poverty to prosperity. More than 16 million homes in the United States are insulated with Zonolite (a type of asbestos) from Libby. However, now Libby has asbestos poisoning rates 60 times higher than the average U.S. community. One third of the entire town has been diagnosed with asbestos poisoning or cancer. Bowker points out that there are 100 asbestos-like minerals contained in American products, and the EPA monitors only 6. The 3,000 products that contain asbestos include children's clothing, baby powder, and brakes for American cars. In this disturbing expos, Bowker reveals how big corporations are covering up the asbestos problem-and getting away with it. Fatal Deception includes an investigation into the profit and cash flow from the sale of asbestos, which experts believe exceeds that of even tobacco. It is estimated that if brought to justice, U.S. companies could pay billions of dollars in damages. He calls for justice for those who are already suffering and encourages future efforts to reduce exposure.

Pathology of Asbestos-Associated Diseases by Victor L. Roggli (Editor), Tim D. Oury (Editor), Thomas A. Sporn (Editor)

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image041.jpg

Pathology of Asbestos-Associated Disease integrates the newest research and advances in its discussion of asbestos induced diseases. Organized in 13 chapters, the book begins with background information on the mineralogy of asbestos, occupation and environmental exposure to asbestos, and asbestosis. A detailed discussion on mesothelioma includes a historical background, addresses etiologic considerations and epidemiology, pathologic features, differential diagnosis and treatment and prognosis. Guidelines for assessing and identifying asbestos-associated carcinomas of the lung, including histopathology and differential diagnosis are discussed. The text also addresses the explosion of research in the area of molecular biology and the abundance of information bearing on the mechanisms by which asbestos causes disease. Chapters also cover cytopathology and experimental models of asbestos related diseases. The diseases associated with asbestos have significant medico-legal implications and there are two chapters dedicated to addressing the issue. More than 190 illustrations complement the text. An invaluable reference for the pathologist, pulmonologist, radiologist, and occupational medical practitioners interested in asbestos related disease as well as malpractice attorneys needing an understanding of asbestos, the diseases it induces, prognosis and clinical implications.

It provides a multi-disciplinary look at sampling methods, analysis, pathology, and regulations. The book explores differences in the detection levels achieved with various techniques applied to the various types of environmental and human samples. This includes comparisons of recommended and/or required sampling schemes and the parameters associated with the instruments used in each of the methods.

Offering state-of-the-art data on asbestos exposure and the resultant development of disease, the content is styled so that the depth of coverage is sufficient for specialists and researchers but also useful for anyone having to deal with asbestos-related problems.

Asbestos and its Diseases (Hardcover) by John E. Craighead (Editor)

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image051.jpg

Although asbestos was once considered a miracle mineral, today even the word itself has ominous implications for all strata of our society. Incorporated in the past into over 3000 different industrial and consumer products, as well as in building materials and military equipment, opportunities for exposure continue to be ever present in our environment. Of all of us who are potentially exposed, blue collar workers are at greatest risk.

Countless thousands of workers and servicemen in a wide variety of trades were disabled or have died consequent to the health effects of asbestos, and many more can be expected to be affected in years to come. Litigation continues, and financial awards in the billions have bankrupt many Fortune 500 companies and numerous smaller companies.

While one might implicate our forefathers in this widespread, relentless medical catastrophe, it has been only in recent decades that science has appreciated the complexities of the problem and the long latencies before the asbestos-associated diseases appear clinically. After all these years, prevention remains the hallmark of disease control, as modern treatments remain, to a large extent, futile.

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (Hardcover) by Kenneth O'Byrne (Editor), Valerie Rusch (Editor)

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image053.jpg

Malignant pleural mesothelioma, a malignancy due largely to asbestos exposure, represents an increasingly common challenge to clinical and medical oncologists, respiratory physicians, and cardiothoracic surgeons, as well as researchers in the field. The disease has yet to reach its peak and is expected to kill over 100,000 people worldwide. As malignant pleural mesothelioma gains in profile, Kenneth O'Byrne and Valerie Rusch present a comprehensive overview of the subject, aimed at all health care professionals who come into contact with patients with the disease. The book includes chapters on epidemiology, diagnosis, histopathology, radiology, surgery, chemotherapy, immune therapy, radiotherapy, and palliative medicine, written by an international team of contributors. A molecular biology section focuses on the carcinogenic effects of asbestos fibers and simian virus 40, angiogenesis and angiogenic growth factors, the immune response, and genetic abnormalities detected in the disease. Future therapies are also covered, as is a perspective on the distinct legal issues related to the disease. This highly-illustrated, full color book provides the ultimate, timely resource on this devastating disease.

They Said Months. I Chose Years! A Mesothelioma Survivor's Story (Perfect Paperback) by J.R. O'Connor

http://asbestosnewsdaily.com/texts/1-Book_Reviews_page_files/image055.jpg

In October 2001, James O'Connor was diagnosed with mesothelioma, the asbestos caused cancer. His prognosis was less than a year to live. Surgery was not possible because of the position of the tumor and chemotherapy would decrease his quality of life and not significantly improve his length of life. His oncologist suggested that he take his wife on a cruise and start hospice care upon his return. James rejected the idea. Instead he was determined to survive this cancer. Working with other professional clinicians, he formulated a regimen of over 100 supplements a day, changed his diet, practiced mind-body medicine, and relied on his own discipline to see him through the difficult times ahead. More than six years later, James is alive and active. He enjoys his life and continues his holistic regimen every day.
